Monica

Data Specialist, Fundriver

What do you do as a remote worker?

I will be in charge of fielding mostly internal tickets for SQL items, mainly related to client imports and exports of data.

What is your favourite part about your remote career?

The flexibility to live abroad but also is able to visit my family as often as I like.

What was one thing you learned from Remote Like Me that helped you to go remote?

I know they made a difference because the interviewers mentioned them in the interviews.

1. I was short on the technical skills they needed, but I addressed it in my cover letter and told them why I was still a candidate to consider (to be specific, I have an accounting background and therefore will understand their data better since they’re an accounting software company).

2. I messaged someone in the company on Linkedin asking what it’s like to work for the company.

Why did you enjoy being a VIP member so much?

Mostly the accountability and encouragement. It’s hard doing the work it takes to get a remote job, especially when everyone around you thinks it’s a very long shot.

What advice do you have for others looking to go remote?

Take full advantage of online courses like on Coursera — that probably made a big difference in my case, especially since I was transitioning from finance to data. Click here to browse Coursera courses

What a story! From someone who lacks technical skills and still managed to secure a data specialist job. On top of that, working remotely where she has the flexibility to live anywhere she wants with the support from the community. Where there’s a will, there’s a way! Kaitlyn

VP of Customer Support for Vanessa Mooney Jewellery

What do you do as a remote worker?

My list is large ha! I handle all Customer Service inquiries via Live Chat, Emails and all social media platforms. Our Instagram gets a lot of activity!!

I manage the day to day inquires as well as escalated situations. I have a small team of two under me.

What is your favourite part about your remote career?

The freedom of not being confined to one place as well as the love I have for apparel and accessories. I love all art forms and this company specifically holds a special place in my heart.

What was one thing you learned from Remote Like Me that helped you to go remote?

I learned A LOT from the RLM community. It helped me broaden my job search as well as connect with others, aiming for the same goal. Having that support really pushed me to go after what I wanted. Taylor’s videos and past VIP member’s stories are also very helpful.

Why did you enjoy being a VIP member so much?

I enjoyed being a VIP member because of the one-on-one attention. I knew that I had it in me to be a free bird and work anywhere I wanted to with my laptop in tow, but Taylor and the other members gave me that extra little boost I needed. I would highly recommend the VIP group to anyone looking to go remote, even if you’ve done it before.

This is proof that even though we’re all working remotely – wherever in the world we want it, we are playing an important role for the company. As a remote worker, Kaitlyn even have a small team working under her! And surrounded by people who are aiming for the same goal, really put us at ease in this oh-so-wide-internet-world. There are tons of people who are just like Kaitlyn and we all need that support and push to do what we love to do, in a place where we want it to be.

Angela

Marketing & PR Manager, The Marfan Foundation non-profit

VIP membership

What do you do as a remote worker?

Marketing strategy and implementation that helps advance the organization’s mission. I work on building and executing social media, email, and other digital marketing tactics for community development, outreach and fundraising.

What was one thing you learned from Remote Like Me that helped you to go remote?

Customizing my resumes for individual positions, but really learned how to do this well, with keywords from the job description in RLM. I started building word clouds to help prioritize what keywords I should use in each and this helped tailoring resumes feel more manageable.

Why did you enjoy being a VIP member so much?

It helped me to not give up when the search got long and frustrating. If nothing else, there was always hope that something good would show up in the weekly roundup.

Another success story from a customer who takes my word seriously about the importance of having a killer resume with keywords and good design. A word document resume is just so blah and it won’t make you stand out! Need tips on how to spice up your resume? Book my resume overhaul here.

Tiffany

Implementation Plan Manager, TaskMaster Pro Technologies (TMP)

What do you do as a remote worker?

My day to day so far (it has only been 2 weeks) has been brushing up on the TMP software as well as rules and regulations for the industry.

What was one thing you learned from Remote Like Me that helped you to go remote?

Learning to ask for what I want without feeling bad about it and realizing that I need to be myself. Like any relationship, you don’t want to settle. I want to work for a company that wants me for who I am. I’m not going to change my personality for anyone.

Why did you enjoy being a VIP member so much?

With Taylor, you get no pretending, no sugar coating. It’s like your best friend who will tell you like it is and actually knows what she’s talking about.

What advice do you have for others looking to go remote?

It seriously is all about who you know. Make those connections; put your true self out there. Don’t be embarrassed about what you want, be the squeaky wheel. Life is too short.

I couldn’t have said it better myself. Life IS short and this amazing lady here knows exactly who she is and how she wants her life to be.
